I have a 6 month old blue Swedish drake. Monday (4 days ago) we found him in the coop unable to walk or hold his head up. There was not any sign an animal got in. I’m thinking he got his neck stuck somewhere and he injured himself.

He would drink when we would hold his head up and offer water. He has not eaten since Sunday night. He has slowly improved. Today he is quacking, can shake his tail and even walk. Granted his walk is a bit unbalanced. He can get to his water bowl and take drinks on his own.

But in feeling his neck it feels like the base is pushed in and I can feel the bone from the front of his throat. He used to stand very upright. The picture I have included is from this afternoon.

He is improving, but wondering about his poor neck. Can a dislocated neck be fixed?

I appreciate your help!!

He appears to have wry neck or crook neck, which can be a symptom of head injuries, vitamin deficiency, and is seen in some diseases. When he couldn’t walk, did his legs appear paralyzed or limp. Was his neck limp at that time, or just stuck down? Botulism can be common in ducks who eat a toxin found in dead animals or fish, and vegetation that has been underground or underwater. Botulism causes paralysis of the legs, spreading to wings, neck, and breathing muscles. It usually kills within a day, and animals who survive more than 2 days usually recover.

I would treat your duck with thiamine (vitamin B1) found in poultry vitamins, in BComplex tablets or nutritional yeast, and vitamin E 400 iu twice a day. Wry neck can take days or weeks to treat, depending on the cause.

His legs and neck were limp. He could move them a little, but not enough to hold himself up. I have 8 other ducks and they seem fine. They all eat the same things. Are some ducks just more prone to wry neck? Or could it be an injury? I have been giving him poultry liquid vitamins in his water, but will check the content in the morning.

Thank you!!!
