Dislocated turkey wing

She's doing so great, and you guys are SO very supportive. Thank you!

Yeah her stump now looks like a smaller bruised stump. It's funny - they plucked all the feathers in the area while she was under sedation. So the top of her thigh, her side, and the bottom of her wing area are all naked. There's a weird gap between her big thigh and her wing. Well there's SUPPOSED to be a gap. When the wing and stump were inflamed, there was no gap and that was very disconcerting as the gap is 1-2 inches wide and this is a young (12lb) turkey.

But the gap is back, and she ate nearly all her meds last night (must remember to pull her food 1 hour before bed so she'll eat it all), and all today. And I didn't even get it all over me. YAY

Now her issue is that she's bored and wants out. Apparently she FLEW up to my bathroom vanity yesterday and then she came down and trashed my bathroom. I found everything from my sinktop in the sink! When I cleared it, I also found three huge poops in the sink. lol! HOW did she do that with one wing?

I don't even want to know. I really don't.

Stupid phone. At least I have the pictures. I' going to try again today.

So she's doing great! The medication giving is working great as long as I pull her food an hour before. She took another stroll through my bathroom yesterday but at least not on the sink!!

She's just the sweetest girl, but I'm really anxious to get her back in with her brother before she attaches too hard to me and not to her kin. BUT it's going to be a bit of time unfortunately. Ah well - no bubble baths for me for a bit.

She's doing wonderful! Today was her last antibiotic treatment. YAY Her little stump looks so pretty. She's even growing her little feathers back on the stump.

OK well "pretty" might not be a good term for it, but for me the little Frankenstump looks pretty darn pretty! It's flesh colored again, just a little bruising! I'm excited about the vet seeing her, but then again I do NOT want to make the trip in the truck with her. I'll be calling him tomorrow for us to figure out what to do. I'd like to avoid the trip if at all possible; don't want her bumping her stump against the carrier.

But she's really getting color back in her face. She blushes so hard when I feed her, it's adorable. She's not climbing on the bathroom vanity any more. Seems that she's accepted that the ground is best.

She's gained more weight than her "brother" (who is probably a hen) - just is bigger, which is good.

All in all, she's doing great! I searched for connection wires to connect my phone to the computer today with no success, but tomorrow I'm taking a bit of an "after" photo of her stump. I think I'm going to make a page on my website about it so people won't have to deal with many photos on here.

But thanks for asking! I sure love that silly girl. She still thinks my fingers are food, though. >.>

So glad to hear a good report! I agree that it is probably best to avoid a car trip. I bet you can remove her stitches yourself when the time comes. What other follow up care does she need?

I believe that her stump is pretty... after all you have been through!!! It must be a huge relief to see it healing and growing feathers.

Honestly, I've removed so many stitches before - I'm sure I could remove these. If I can get my demon phone to work, I'm pretty sure I could possibly send a picture of her and have him evaluate.

You know what - I'm going to go buy a cheap digital camera tomorrow. Then at least from now on I can use it. And still download these pictures onto the website.

But stitches are no big deal. Her site where he put the skin over looks beautiful - just a line there like someone drew on it with pen (which he might have - hmm have to look again). Seriously unless there's a surprise, I dont think she needs any followup care other than just making sure it really does have time to heal before she goes back out. I'm considering letting her feather over first.

Yeah, she still flaps that wing. She did her "turkey ballet" today (you know where they stretch a leg and wing on the same side) and 'stretched' that little stub, which of course did nothing but move. But she looked absolutely happy and healthy. So it was the most wonderful site I've ever seen. It can't be hurting if she's doing that!

Hugs!!

Thank you!! I'm pretty lucky to have her as she's a big pet. I can't believe how much I really love turkeys. Who'd have thought it?

By the way, for future reference, if you ever have to keep a chicken or turkey in your bathtub, the rolls of shelf-liner that is rubbery and like a loose weave - best stuff EVER!!! Even cecal poops rinse right out of them. The usual poops have air going underneath them from the weave and you can just pick them right off of the flooring with a kleenex. The cecal poops drain through a little and rinse off. You just beat the flooring a bit, right there in the tub, to knock the excess water off. Then I just rinse the tub with a hand-held shower sprayer right with her in the tub. (Turkeys love to stand in water - mine do anyway.) It cleans her feet off, then I wipe the tub with a handtowel (put it over the edge to dry before the evening) and put the rubberized shelving back down.

It's not slippery, doesn't slip under their feet, is airy and doesn't cause sores, and is way easier to clean than a towel.

Thank you, starting.from.scratch, for your kind words.

And for supporting my little Ellalala girl.

There's nothing worse (or better) than a rotten turk. I have 2 blue slates that stand at the steps of the coop and want "help" getting up. They're huge. Course I pick them up and set them at the top of the stair every evening. It's become one of my favorite times. I get to steal great hugs from those great big bodies. And they just stand there and let me get all the loving I can. Funny, you're right, whoda thunk it? I love these big ole silly birds.

Great to hear yours is on the right track. Got a great mom taking care of her.
