Connie, you are so right. Stalin and Russia were terrible and seemed to receive a pass. (Lauren Becall even admitted a few years ago that there were communists in Hollywood, which was obvious seeing the movies glorifying the Russians)
I am reading "Berlin Diaries-19140-1945, by Marie Vassiltchikov, for the 4th time. I finally bought the book. It is the diary of a White Russian princess whose family left Russia in 1919. King George V sent ships to Russia to rescue his aunt (sister of Tsar Nicholas' wife, making George V a first cousin of the murdered Tsar's family). She insisted that other royals be rescued as well, including the author's family.
The author spoke six languages so as a refugee in Germany she needed a job. Because of a shortage of linguists, she was hired for a job with the Foreign Ministry's Information Department and saw first hand secret documents as the documents came in. She knew/worked with the plotters of Hitler. Since she was a compulsive diarist, I read things in this book that I haven't read in other books. Her sister was Tatiana Metternich who also had best selling books. This was a fascinating family in a fascinating time. A true story.
I would say that I admire the traits of hard working people, etc., but a Canadian once got into trouble simply by saying that he admired the Autobahn. A Canadian newspaper printed in large print, " (name) admires Hitler!
BTW, my nephew married a German girl--love her!
