wikipedia says that it facilitates gastric emptying, which would be the use for chickens, to get the crop emptied.
I had never heard of its use in chickens, very interesting.

Clkingtxs is right; it empties the stomache more quickly, thus helping with nausea. Your vet more likely had given you Metronidazole, which is a gastric antibiotic and also an aniti protozoal. Reglan (metaclopramide) will do nothing to clear up giardia.
