I wouldn't mind having quail. The woman I'm getting those cemani crosses from raises Coturnix quail, I think they are the biggest. They do have awesome eggs. She said they hatch quicker, grow faster mature fast, lay eggs early and are ready to butcher early. You can keep a lot in a small space. I'm thinking of getting some for those reasons.

Sure does make them appealing doesn't it! When I was a teen a buddy of mines step dad raised hundreds of them. I'm not sure exactly what he did with them meat/eggs I imagine. I know he sold many to people who used them to train bird dogs in the field.

wow, I can't imagine keeping any bird by the hundreds! they are prolific little birds. I read 5 quail eggs would equal 1 chicken egg..

Yep. 6 weeks to maturity. Mine are laying by 8 weeks. They hatch like popcorn and they're really, really funny to watch. They actually do this little hop when they're happy. They're also fairly friendly and not as flighty as other breeds. I hate them, but I love them too.

I mostly have jumbo.

Except that St. Lucia has that nasty parasite in some of their beach sand, that goes right through your skin and into your leg... and then burrows about

My ducks are with my chickens. They do fine... Actually the ducks seem to be the bosses...

I had ducks with chickens... never again... life is so much cleaner and nicer when they live apart.

Alaskan doesn't heat .. coops either, right? I was just reading an article that stated quail don't like cold...

One quail died from the cold when I had them in a tractor out on the lawn at the end of the summer... it just got too cold for them...

I then moved them into my coop, built a spot under a poop shelf. My coop (just my original coop, nothing else) is insulated, and I enclosed the under the poop shelf area for them. There is ZERO draft there, and they have done very well, even when their water freezes solid.

Only thing is that they lay where ever they are standing... so you have to keep the entire enclosure super clean, or the eggs get nasty.

Ok, I didn't want to know about that parasite... LOL. Anyway I am not worried, the beaches were went on where pristine white. The resort we stayed at employed special people to rake the beaches every morning! What a life!!

One morning we saw 5 guys dig a big hole (2 actively, 3 leaning against their shovel) so we asked what they were doing. Answer "We have to burry the seaweed" I am sure one guy was just employed to answer the stupid questions of tourists...

I have a spot right over my chicken nest boxes where I could built them something. Enough space for just a few quail. I am thinking light frame out of PVC and enclose with fine mesh. Tie to the back of the wall. In the winter there would be enough room to put a red heat bulb over them.

That is if hubby doesn't let me take over the big insulated shed....
