Dixie Chicks

Thanks for the invite! I live in the land of Mississippi and have Arabian horses, a German Shepherd dog, cats, and you guessed it...CHICKENS!!! I have about a dozen hens of various breeds, and now have 35 or so Marans chicks I hatched about 6 weeks ago. That was my first successful incubator hatch. Setting more eggs now and can't wait to see what hatches! :)

Wait!!! Whut???

Did you say that you successfully hatched 35 Marans ON YOUR FIRST TRY?!?!?!?

@Alaskan, you need to get some of her luck rubbed off on you!

If you tell Alaskan your secret, you will be revered forever! :D ;)

I know! I read that... and I just wanted to crawl into a hole....

MAN!

Maybe it is just the roosters that are expensive can't perform???

My hatchery Dominique is covering every hen that comes close... I maybe had one or two clears in almost 30 eggs that I set (from hens that HE covered)

My Marans?? PAH! the first set had about 70% fertility, the last set had about FIFTY percent fertility!!!

AND, my fancy Ameraucana bantam rooster pened up in a lovely chicken tractor with ONE hen.... is running close to FIFTY % fertility too!!!

great to meet you :) so whats your favorite chicken and why? :)

Great to meet you to :) So far my favorite is the Welsummer. I had 3 sisters, my first chickens since I was little, but 2 have been lost to predator attacks, so just have the one left now. The other two were excellent mothers. My Welsummers were/are the friendliest chickens...always following me around and talking to me. The one I still have runs to me as soon as I get home. They are gorgeous, super friendly chickens that lay gorgeous speckled brown eggs.

Yes. Well, about 5 of those are Olive Eggers...the rest are pure Marans. Not the black coppers though...a rainbow of other colors. I'm hearing that the Black Coppers, particularly the darker egg ones, are the hardest to hatch. My eggs weren't the real dark ones, maybe that helped!

Wait... were those eggs from ladycat by any chance??

She has crazy great fertility and shipped eggs hatch rates...
