Dont know but Bresse is pretty high up on the gourmet list.

The cachet on Bresse is in the finishing of them. The last couple of months they're fed a restricted diet heavy in milk and grain. The white Bresse are the ones sold commercially, but true gourmand chefs prefer the black Bresse because the flavor is a little more intense. About a pound less meat, though. The black Bresse are also the better layer in both size and quantity. I want to incubate some, but not willing to pay $60/doz for eggs.
Dorkings are also high the the list for gourmet chickens.

thank you, doing well, the fire finally got the house warmed up a bit... feeling like a more normal house. It was down to 40-something this morning, because we had no fire yesterday.


That reminds me.... a GREAT many years ago, I was a grad student, and I was teaching an under-grad class. I was up at the front giving my lecture, when one of the kids raised their hand...

I called on him, and instead of asking a class related question he asked me if there was some reason why I was dressed the way I was. I said 'huh'? He said that today was valentines day.... I had had NO idea, and then I looked down at myself, and saw that I was wearing black jeans, and a black concert T-shirt with a bleeding heart in the middle surrounded by a crown of thorns. (What band was that? I don't remember

) I told him "I had no idea what day it was, I put this stuff on because it was clean"

I was already dating "spouse" at the time.

Dude, I am so stupidly dense it boggles the mind, how I could be THAT dense and never have a clue.

LOL. My DH and I got married on Valentine's Day down at Oakland City Hall which opened especially on Sunday for that purpose...I think 114 couples got married there that day. Anyway, Fox News came for interviews and there was a little snippet of Yours Truly saying it would be a date easy for the husband to remember as Hallmark wouldn't let him forget. Well, sure enough, about a year later we're having dinner with friends and discussing what we had done on Valentine's Days past. My husband looks puzzled and says, "I know we did something. Didn't we go out to dinner? I seem to remember flowers." I could only glare at him... "You idiot. Really?? Does going to Carmel by the Sea for a honeymoon ring a bell?" He truly had disassociated the date and the event. Aware, but clueless.... You're in good company.

I planned on white bresse in the spring. I can get a breeding trio for $125, hour drive from my house. But too many other plans now. Adding three other breeds. Cemani crosses, black and blue langshan and white jersey giants. I do like the look of the bresse, and their free ranging ability. And I have access to plenty of dairy for finishing. Free cottage cheese and milk, and condensed whey also but my birds don't seem to like the whey, it's a acid whey, cheddar and mozzarella production makes a sweet whey.

My lord $125 sounds like a lot to pay for the chickens!
I was fussy over $5 a dozen for hatching eggs. Maybe I'm just cheap (DW is shaking her head yes at me being cheap)

Wouldn't a Webasto or something be more practical? It would save the engine a bit too...

all of the heavy equipment (excavator's, grader, loader, rock tricks and trucks) at my work have webastos but I don't think they are common in automotive. More common is the plug in block heaters.

So I did some reading on Bresse. There is a lot that goes into getting them ready to slaughter if you do it the traditional French way. Green fire farms is selling them, day old chicks are $29 apiece then a flat $35 for shipping. I had no idea they were so expensive.
