8.3 quake just hit Chile around Santiago.... We are under Tsunami watch from San Onofre and San Louis Obisbo up... Hawaii too ... should hit the California coast about 4 am.

San Onofre is where our nuclear power plant resides. About thirty miles up the coast from us here.

They said the Quake was felt on the other side of the continent in Argentina.

Hi Jem!

Haven't been on here....too much to do and too little computer time to read much.
Good to see you back!

Meaties go to the butcher on Friday...25 Cornish X....friend gets 10 of them. I'm glad they are about done.
Hatched some Icelandic chicks from eggs from another breeder. Will keep the pullets and rehome cockerels.
Hatched some Icelandic chicks from my flock. Will rehome pullets with the above cockerels and keep two cockerels from my original cock...he is five and a half and I am planning on one of his sons being a replacement for him in the future.
We had some cool days and nights last week to remind us that Fall is on the way but this week has been high 80s and clear.
Corn and soybean harvest will start here soon.
The hickory nuts are falling now and it is like walking on marbles and golf balls out there!!
haha been awhile since I've had to deal with nuts trying to slip ya up on the ground almost forgot what thats like :) ohh if you get a chance love to see pics of your new chickies :)

I want to give meaties a try free ranged and fed on Fermented Feed I have seen videos of how well they do when not pushed so hard to grow. It only takes them a couple of weeks longer to get to butcher weight But they dont stink and they dont have leg problems.

ya I think be interesting n educational just to see what they are like ect..... wouldnt you have to much trouble with free ranging meaties there? I thought you wanted a more wiley type to help against the predator issues there?
I'm probably never going to bother with those... too many extra roos running around already... I'll take the skimpier meat over a whole nother setup...
hmm.png
ideally thats what I wanna try with the dual purpose breeds I have........beable to keep a more closed flock and substain off the hatchlings ect...but I think the CX be a educational and perhaps something might work well for denser breast meat as 50 likes.... personally have found the dual purposes are great for thigh meat drums ect...which works for me cuz I love dark meat... anyways think be interesting to see exactly for myself how they grow and process

Quote: Yeah no I need to rephrase that keep the meaties in with the egg layers that will have access to the BIG run... 24 x 50 secure run... With lots of Enrichment activites.... Treat cups and fresh veggies hung by strings....

but the idea is to let them out entice them to be chickens as long as I can before they get too big. There really is no foraging unless its in the horse poo. Good green stuff for chickens in horse poo.

I had one little red hen that spend hours in the poo pile every day Horses digestive system depends on a cecum as well so they dont digest as well as cows do. I have seen grain in the poo and the horses turning around and foraging in it along with the chickens... LOL. Its a normal thing for horses... not just the grain but the gut flora and fauna for replenishment. Good for horses... got to be good for chickens.

There is food out in the desert for the chickens... lots of bugs and seeds and when the Filaree is growing Very green and nutritios... these past three days of rain will have it sprouting right now... Byt the end of the week it will have bloomed by the end of three weeks it will have produced cork screw seeds.. Dad used to say those are excellent forage for the cows.

Interesting thing is the whole plant is edible even for people....

Have you tried Denagard (Tiamulin) for it? Think it works good for controlling MG... and no egg withdrawal either...
Not tried that. I've tried Pig Swig, Tetracycline, and Corid. I also give them ACV water and gave them pumpkin seeds. Just trying to eliminate any worms and any other possible issues. Luckily these pullets are not laying, so I don't have to worry about withdrawal period. Honestly, I hate medicating any of them and I feel that when I medicate the flock, it weakens my flock. Therefore, I am just going to let nature take it's course. I've tried about all I am willing to try. They get better, then get sick again. The winters are bad here usually, and anything that makes it thru this winter is strong. So, we'll see next spring what we have.
