I did almost cut the tail off (sort of like an Indian scalping his victim), but I could not bring myself to do it. It was hard enough triple bagging it.
I once camped in Fla in a state park on the Ocean near Panama City. Raccoons had been hand fed by unwise campers, and left spoils as easy pickings in the camp sights. Those animals could open any and every cooler fastener there was, as well as operate zippers! If you didn't lock your cooler in your car trunk, repeat campers knew to bring two "suitcase belts" used to prevent suitcases from flying open if dropped. Two of those fashioned with the "fasteners" on opposite sides usually secured the cooler.
