The only time I've seen black-eyed peas fresh in the store is right around New Year's. You're right, there's nothing like them.
Have you had fresh garbanzo beans / chickpeas? A pain to shell as there's only one or two per pod, but divine when poached for about 15 minutes and cooled.

hmm did a lil snooping, and some of what I saw was related to the breeds and the female versus male having a genetic code that is passed onto the chick..but one or the other has to have the gene for it to be reliable...

Martha Stewart has a really good recipe for "Spatchcocked Chicken with Chickpeas" where they are roasted. DH raved about it, especially the garbanzos
