Dixie Chicks

always.
just got a 308, not that one though

what you going to use that for @Beer can .. btw wasnt it you did you get a bear?

Saw a bear opening day, but only for a few seconds. There is lots of them around here. Didn't see him again only tracks.
I've always hunted with a bolt action .308. Great deer gun, knocks every one I point it at down. I even knocked one down at around 600yrds with a 4x scope. I used to use my fathers old Remington model 788 it's wore out now. Now I have a cheap Mossberg with a 3-9x scope. I want the Ruger Gunsite because it is a short 16 1/2 inch barrel, with the option of putting a forward mounted long eye relief scope on, for quick shooting, they say like shooting a shotgun. Good brush gun, but also accurate at long distance. I would get a couple five round clip for hunting though.

Morning!

Yesterday I got home from work to discover my first day where 5 chickens laid an egg! I really should invest into a basket to collect eggs into before I start dropping them.

Nice looking project Vehve! If your insulating stuff is the same that we used on the mouse holes in our house walls then you should be able to either saw or sand paper any excess away. Looks like your little injured chick is doing well?

My cold has decided to leave the lungs but has settled into my head. Anyone have any good ideas how to get my head back to normal? The good news is because the cold is only manifested my head the rest of the body doesn't feel sick.

BC, yeah, probably the same PU foam you use over there. It's easy to cut away, but I could have done with cleaner surfaces to begin with. I I want the inner lid to sit tightly I'm going to have to get it pretty clean.

Flappy is doing great, I'd like to integrate him already, but I think we need to let skin grow over the raw patch first. It would get pretty infected otherwise. So for now we'll get to enjoy the stink and dust.

Have you tried one of those things that you flush your sinuses with? They probably sell them at pharmacies. Neti Pot is one brand. Seems to work fine for me when I feel clogged up.

Congrats on your five egg day!

Hiya. Just got back from picking up some feed. We visited a local farm and got a few different kinds of grains and some game bird mix. We went a little bit crazy, it's going to take us ages to feed 120 kilos of feed...

Birds didn't want to co-operate when I was taking a pic.

Those two darker boys sure have developed huge combs. And they're very red. I'm starting to rethink the lighter ones, but I guess they're just developing a bit slower, probably still boys.
It may take a while to use up the feed but doesn't feel good to know you have it on hand?

As for the combs, I have found in my flock that if there are more than two cockerels in a group, the dominant two will get larger, pinker combs the quickest. The lower ranking will not mature as quickly......now take the two dominant ones out, and then "poof" the others show their true colors. Based on feather pattern alone, I'd have to the say the grayish one may be a pullet. Are it's legs stocky?

Beer, I really like the finish on that rifle.

If I ever get around to getting a rifle, a .308 is what I'm looking for. I've been eyeing the Tikka T3, I like the Varmint, and especially the sportser. Really cool looking gun. Remington 700 would be a cheap and reliable option too.

But this is just so darn pretty:

NAF, I'd say the legs are a bit skinnier than on the two darker ones. But like you said, it might just be maturing more slowly. I guess time will tell whether it's a boy or a girl. If we end up with any pullets from this bunch, it will be a pleasant surprise, since we labeled them all boys from the get go.

That feed would last 2 weeks here @vehve . We go thru 3 x 50#bags every 2 weeks. 53 chickens....14 are roosters. Feels like I'm raising pigs.

@Amberjem , I love my Dixie rainbow. The only bad quality I have found is she is so heavy that she will not go to roost. I have even put roost bars down low (like 1 and 2 feet off the ground), So, she roosts on the ground which has caused burn on her stomach. If I am out there, I put her on the roost. She is very friendly, just HUGE. She is the same size as my Jersey Giants. I will be getting more from the feed store this year if they have them again.

Well today is the big day. An hour away. The hour that can change my life. I have serious hesitation about getting a new job. I am more of a creature of habit and not exactly one to embrace change. This job is only part time which means no insurance. And it's now a law in the USA that you have to have medical insurance. I pay $600 a month for medical, dental, life, and vision. If I get this job, I will have to do some insurance shopping to do. Also clothing shopping! Its hard to start over at any age, I guess. But I am going to try my darnedest. Maybe this is MY YEAR!

Thanks so much for all the well wishes. It helps. You all are like my circle of friends. I recently lost a huge circle of friends at work, about 8 months ago all my friends started quitting, moving on, finding other jobs. Change of management ripped that place that used to feel like home apart. I have been looking, but knowing that management has changed SO MANY TIMES in the past 17 years. But like I said earlier, I have many reasons for leaving. Management doesn't scare me.

I shouldn't say I "lost" my friends. We still email, talk, or text, but it's not frequent. Life changes.

Off my soap box.....The CCL breeder messaged me back. If we can get together, I am buying them this weekend

. I have to get the quarantine coop together with dividers for the roosters. The winds blew down a side wall and ripped apart the main house a few months ago and I have had no need for it recently. I'd better get ready for my busy day! Hope everyone has a wonderful day!

I always assume they are all cockerels so I'm happy if any turn-out to be pullets!

They look like they are doing great. I'm anxious for March to get here so I can set some eggs!! Set date for chicken eggs for the Easter Hatchalong (eggs scheduled to hatch the day before Easter) will be Saturday, March 14. I hope my five year old Audun is still up to the task!

Oh, I didn't realize you'd have 2 lids on it, but it makes sense.

Hopefully Flappy will have an easy integration, from what I know about chickens I would wait with integration until there is no more red or you might be asking for trouble.

JWB, good luck, blow them away.

We still had maybe 20 kilos of feed left, so we now have about 140 kilos, or 300 lbs. For 9 birds. Out of which four are suspected roos and won't be with us more than a few months. Okay, they will probably be replaced by some more pullets, but still. And I probably need to get some more of our hippy dippy mix to balance this stuff out, right now we've got 40 kilos of dried peas and 25 kilos of canola pellet, both of which are way too high in protein to be fed as is.

NAF, that's the best way to do it, that way you never get disappointed. And why not set already, I mean it's not that cold outside...
