I pretty much have the build figured out, but I'm having trouble coming up with something for the gutter end of the roof. It needs to drain, hold soil in place, and be cheap, but withstand being exposed to the soil. Maybe some plastic netting.

You betcha I will. Your wifes Grandma was hilarious.... Mine can be... Boy let a good looking man like a paramedic come in the house and shes fluttering her eyelashes and flirting away...

grandma can remember stuff back when she was for or five years old. She was born in 1916. when She was born her oldest brother was in the army during World War 1.

She remembers the first time they ever saw a flush toilet. On their way to California and a new life they stayed in their first hotel. In those days there was one toilet on a floor and every one had to use it. She and her sister went together and when it was time to flush..... They RAN... they thought they had broke it.

Buddy of mines mother was telling us one day she had a friend, an elderly lady that was at risk for losing her disability for having too much money socked away in the bank, she was a penny pinching saver. She said she told the woman to spend it on fixing up her house, maybe put in a bathroom (she still had a outhouse! and this was only maybe 20yrs ago) The woman said no way! that was something she could never understand, why someone would want to crap in their house!

Hmmm.... Netting better be strong.... What about a French drain, or something similar

Yeah, about 2-5% grade. I'm thinking of building the gutter end with treated wood, leaving a ½" gap at the bottom. I have some plastic mosquito net that might work in the gap. Just need to figure out how to attach it.

What are you going to grow on the roof?
Oh I understand better now netting would probably work or of course screen why don't you just attach it was staples? Use a piece of trim or something similar to stop the staples from tearing your netting... So lay out your netting put down the trim staple through the trim...

what did everyone do today?

Worked, came home and ate supper, took care of the animals, watched Idol (a girl from my area made it to Hollywood), did some laundry, watched House Hunters and HH International and went to bed. I did catch-up on the thread before bed.

Staples would penetrate the waterproofing... But we'll see what I can think of. Sedum plants would probably be the easiest to grow, but I'm thinking it would be cool to grow herbs as well.

Basically, I'll first build the foundation out of waterproof plywood, strengthened with 2x2's or 2x4's below. Then I thought I'd put down some bitumen roofing, I have some left of a roll of base roofing. Since it won't be out in the sun, I won't need to shingle over it. But this layer needs to be pretty water proof, so I'll build a frame around it, and seal with bitumen paint. Then comes a plastic layer, I'll use plastic meant for protecting foundations below ground. I think the gutter end should be built before the plastic comes on. On top of the plastic, I'll lay a treated wood frame that will support the soil, the frame should have maybe 1x1 foot squares. Then I'll put a 2" layer of leca gravel to allow for drainage, and then maybe 2-4" of soil on top of that.

The thing needs to be pretty strong though, the soil itself will weigh a bit, and it needs to support some snow too. I think about 300-400 kg per square meter will be a pretty realistic max weight. That will make for a pretty sturdy bunny hutch

Well since the Staples will penetrate your roofing I actually go back to my other idea of the French drain... Id take a piece of PVC that was the length I needed youd want a diameter that's not going to fall through your gap, drill a crap load of holes in it and I just put that on my gap and bury it you wouldn't have to attach it...

Sedum would obviously be great requiring the least soil, I'm sure you can get herbs to grow up there but it would be pretty sweet if the roof of your hutch grew bunny food...
