House building ideas still floating around like mad today.
I really like all of the stuff I stuffed into the addition to my house. if I could sum it up...

1. I like all of the stuff that 'The Not So Big House' chick wrote.

2. SIGHT LINES, ultra important. I worked hard to make sure that whenever you turned a corner, you can see out a window. This way, even in a tiny cramped house, the house feels big, because the sight line lets your eyes see outside. I even have a small window in my closet. When you look into my closet, you look out the tiny window to the outside. Pretty blue sky, nice view, and it is located so that I do NOT loose any storage space. But having the window there makes a huge difference. I highly recommend it.

I made sure that the closet in the kids room is behind the door, NOT seen, but you do see right out the window.

Also, for my bedroom, I put in a half wall when you enter the room specifically to hide the dressers and all of the junk that I knew would always be there.

Other big things....

standard builders light fixtures are silly things that only take a max of 60 watts. I wanted things that took 100 watts.... you can always put in less, and I WANT LIGHT! Not sure if that applies with all of the totally strange light bulbs now available.

Other thing, OUTLETS! The code here in Alaska, says that they have to be every some odd feet along the wall of the room. However, this means that often the plugs all end up behind the beds.

I hate that.

Make sure the plugs end up where you want them, NOT behind the bed or the dresser, put the plug in an accessible spot.

Also... seeing that you are in a frozen dark wasteland....

I really like the house plans where a big mud porch area is hidden behind the door... where you can hide YOUR coats and hats and boats (all all of the kids), but there is a neat spot for the guests to put their stuff.

Also, the people who don't have an arctic entry/mud porch are crazy, or billionaires.

IT is killing me.... I used to have this great canadian firm bookmarked, that had the best house plans... small houses, but with BIG mud porches, and very wonderful... and that much have been years back...

before this computer,

I can't remember the name of the company

The reason for the code on outlets is that hundred plus year old house like mine have one outlet per room. So you add a four way so you can plug in your tv, dvd, satellite receiver, and air conditioner.

Ours does have a mud room though! Keeps the wind from blowing in the rest of the house. With a concrete floor thank god. Our washer and dryer was out there when we first moved in, busted water line first subzero night, 2" of hot water going out the door. Washer and dryer are now stackable front loaders in bathroom closet.

Morning all. I am just going to say Morning, because that is how it is going for me. We somehow ran out of coffee, which I thought we had at least 2 more containers of it in the freezer, so I adapted and overcame....I have little Keurig pods, but we don't have a Keurig. (We have one at work, so I sometimes have a coffee at work). I emptied a bunch of the pods into the coffee filter & turned it on. Only to come back to the coffee pot and find the darn thing has not brewed the coffee and is indeed broke.

I will be making a stop at my local McDonald's this morning on the way to work for coffee. Thankfully I do love their coffee. I just hate to spend money needlessly. And now, I have to get coffee and a new coffee pot on the way home from work. Not how I wanted to start the day.

I'll catch up with you all later. Have a good day!

McDonalds coffee mmm. Dollar any size here. We have a Hess across the road at work with Dunkin Donuts coffee mmm. I never buy it to $$$. When I'm in the milk receiving bay drivers offer to buy me one, hell yeah!
When I am on a job on the other side of the plant tucked away from everyone I bring my Stanley thermos. Not supposed to have food or drink inside but I never see anyone down there. Stanley's keep coffee hot all day long.
