Dixie Chicks

LOL I like it :)

ahh cant see in the eggs then bummer! did you get the ozart flashlight to candle that @bamadude suggested?

Yes. It works great, but you cannot see details that well with the dark eggs. AND they've only been set (on the 29th) for 4 days, so I didn't expect to see much. I did use the flashlight, though, to determine where the air cell was in a couple of eggs that you couldn't tell which end was which.... which seems to happen a bit with marans for some reason. Why are sellers sending out round eggs like that? This last batch was funny because she wrote what color they were on the top end, but on the ones she couldn't tell then the writing was on the side of the egg.

oh kewl what color maran eggs did you get?

yes. I raise black and chocolates. I have three chocolate girls left, a black pullet that's very young, and a black split to chocolate rooster.

Morning.

Crazy prices on those breeds, I don't think I could imagine paying more than a few euros for an egg or maybe 30-40 for a full grown bird.

Flappy seems to be more and more accepted into the flock every day. But there are still some issues when he's on the floor, the others start chasing him every once on a while. And this morning one of the chicks jumped out of the coop while we were doing the morning chores. Then it was just standing there in the snow, wondering what the heck the white stuff is, afraid to move.

Agreed. The prices are nuts. I seen some ducks yesterday on CL that were priced very fair. There was a drake Appleyard and the hen was Saxony. The 4 ducklings were called Applesax. I thought that was cool and they were all beautiful. The breeder even listed how to care for the ducks. I have all I can handle at the moment though. Still have to get rabbit hutches made

and mama rabbit is getting fatter! I need to send pics of them so maybe you all can help me determine the breed. ? I did go and look at a rabbit hutch off CL yesterday. Look is all I did. That thing was so flimsy, my rabbits are HUGE! Not like a Flemish giant, but this cage was not adequate for them.

10 minutes until I wake the crew up and serve up breakfast. Then 2 1/2hrs and they all head off!

We are still trying to figure out the best spot to place a bunny hutch in the yard. We did some planning today, the first idea was to build it a bit out of the way, but we don't really have very good spots for that. So now I'm thinking we might just build it pretty enough to stand in a more central spot in the yard. The coolest idea would be to have a green roof on top of it, but then you couldn't open the roof for cleaning. I still have some planning to do...

I threw some sprouts in for the big guys today, they really liked them. One of the baby roos even ventured out into the run adn spent maybe a minute on the floor of it before jumping up on the roosts. His sister followed him out to the roosts as well.

They retreated back inside pretty quickly though.

The two dark boys are almost as big as Virpi already. I think they're going to be huge. Tomorrow the chicks will be 7 weeks old. The two dark ones are clearly boys, but I still have hope for both the light ones, especially the one on the left. Flappy is on the right, up on the roost in this picture. As you can see, he/she is a bit behind with the feathering, and he/she isn't as big as the other ones either.

We're also experimenting a bit with these green cubes we got when we picked up feed the last time. It's one kilo of dry, compressed grass with some molasses in it I think. I threw one into the run today, the rooster seemed mildly interested. We'll see how they take to it like this, otherwise I'll try what the seller suggested, putting it in a plastic bag and pouring some water in there, and then poking small holes in it after it's soaked up the water. Apparently the birds should pull out grass from the holes. I'd prefer to feed it dry though, since then you eliminate the problems with freezing.

I also installed the new insulated waterer. It's ugly as heck, but we'll see how it works. If it seems to be good, I'll probably make a new one out of square buckets since it's a lot easier to install. I'll try to grab some pictures later.
