Dixie Chicks

Mini, I hope the rest of them hatch. Which ducks were the ones notorious for bad hatching? Plant update: So far the tomatoes under the grow lights are doing a lot better. Some of these already have pretty thick stems. The tallest ones are about 3 inches now. The tomatoes on the windowsill aren't as developed, but it's a sunny week so they should do fine. The chilis are doing great, they've started branching out. I picked the beginnings of flower buds. I should have marked the seeds I planted in the tin cans. All but one have sprouted, but it will take me weeks before I can identify what it is that isn't growing.
call are notorious to be hard hatchers. Last year I hand turned all calls and had 80% hatches. This year, not so much. Think I'm going back to hand turning.

jem, ever try aleve, or naproxen sodium?
When my back was messed up it was the only thing that helped, didn't kill the pain like tylonol, but I'd have to take tons of tylonol. Two a day of aleve dulled it down, I couldn't get anything better no health insurance at the time, besides I don't like pills, not good for the liver.

Beer, exactly. I don't want her killing them out of panic.

I just looked at some pictures from last spring, looking at the parents of our current batch of chicks. On the hen's side, the cockerels with the same mix of parents all had a lot more developed combs at three weeks than any of our current chicks do. I could only find a pic of the sire at 4 weeks, but there he has a lot bigger comb than any of these chicks do. Could we be beating the odds and could all of the chicks be girls? It would even out our total stats at exactly 50-50 since the previous four chicks all turned out to be boys. And looking at the crappy pictures I've got of the completely unrelated cockerels in the previous batch, they too have more pronounced combs at around 3 weeks of age. I won't get my hopes up yet, but it's possible we might up our laying flock quite nicely with these chicks. And they should make some lovely colored eggs.

Another interesting thing. The sire for these chicks has yellow/pink feet. On the hen's side, the cockerels both had yellow feet and beaks, while the hen has black/grey feet and a dark beak. All of these chicks have dark feet, and a lot of dark on their beaks. That could be a sex linked trait.

Had a bad thunder/lightning storm last night, lost internet :'( so to bed early and couldn't chime in on the whole autosexing brownleghorns. I can't find anywhere that says this can be done. They are the same color as welsummers as chicks and adults and welsummers can be sexed, but I find nowhere saying it can be done with leghorns. ?
