Marmot ?

Whats another name for a woodchuck?

OH....a Marmot....I know what they sound like and look like too, I thought it was some sort of weasel....I met a Marmot at Mirror Lake when I was hiking in Wa State once.

@dgibson, If the cull is too hard....if there is a pet store somewhere....I found both a pet snake owner and an owl owner (not legal) both of whom were happy to get live fodder for animals they cared for, by asking around the pet store. Both were workers there.

Glad everything went alright Deb. Yesterday DD, DS, DIL, & I walked a 5k for hunger awareness. We all had fun. Eye opening though. We seen several sites where homeless people sleep. Seen a whole family that was homeless. I start my new job June 14th & we work to place homeless people in homes, and to help get them back on their feet. I'm excited about my new job. Today is the big day I give my resignation letter to the bank.

Beercan, score here is 2 raccoons, 1 opossum. Last year was not much different as well as activity around our neighborhood, but for some reason, this year the predators are relentless. Too bad for them, I am too!

Dgibson0604, welcome to our thread. I have to agree with the decision to cull. The earlier you do that, the easier.

Outpost I have met People in your profession... social work of this kind is tremendously rewarding... We have homelss here in this little town.... Well of course ... duh there are homeless every where. But I worked at an Arco that was about a quarter block away from the San Diego Riverbed. Huge population of them down there. I got to know some regulars come in to get hot chocolate or cigarettes. Or gallons and gallons of cold drinks from the fountain in the winter. Many had issues with maintaining their alcohol level to keep the DTs away. (for those who dont know alcohol is the only drug that will kill you if you go off it with out assistance) WE didnt sell alcohol in the store. Some were off their meds and tried to keep it together to do transactions. then go out and finish the argument they were having with an unseen individual. But always if they brought their own drink container we charged them very little.

Here there is Father Joe and his ministry... Catholic they get thousands off the streets every year... family's and Veterans anyone who wants.... The ministry even offers school to all who need it... or Teens living on the street back into school and eventually off to college.

Hes retired now but the work goes on. We are fortunate here to have a decent climate but in winter there used to be a policy to set up tent cities all over to give them a place to stay when the weather was cold and rainy. That changed last year....

I cannot imagine this kind of work in a climate such as Ohio has.... hats off to you....

today was a tough day... spent from about 4 pm to 10 pm in the ER. Grandma came through with flying colors... with a teeny adjustment to her heart meds.... Whew... I dont know who is more disabled .... she with 100 years of living or me with 61 years of riding hard and putting the horse away wet....

I am very excited about starting there. Hubby is not so thrilled. It's downtown Cincinnati and Cincinnati can be a rough city. The office where I work is locked 24/7 if that gives you any idea of the area. Trying to rationalize, security is better there than at the bank. And people needing money are more likely to rob a bank or convenient store than an office that carries no cash......:/. Most of the shootings downtown are drug or gang related. Not to say I'm not worried, but it's not enough to stop me.

One gal used to ride her bike with her bags of cans on the back and a little white poodle riding shot gun in the front. She was living in the river bed. I asked her if she had family any where.... she scoffed. Yep a sister two blocks up who wont talk to her.... I didnt ask why. then an ex husband who was the one that put her out on the streets. The divorce was nasty he got everything....

Last I heard she had connected with a fellow who too was living in the riverbed... Between the two of them and Outreach programs they got an apartment together.... Little doggie and all.

Some of those homelss take in strays give them care and shelter even above their own needs.

Back to chicken news......I lost a perfectly wonderful, healthy, 2-3year old hen today. Dang board fell on her and crushed her. She had been one of our flocks hatchlings. SS x RIR hen. Shoot! I felt like worst chicken owner ever. 1st time an accident has killed any of my chickens. All others have died naturally, illness, or predators.

Sorry, Inwould cull in a heartbreat. Why? Bc I have been through it although not so bad but bad enough I had to pick it up moving it back and forth between water and feed and thought NO way will I be out in ththe rain doing this in a chicken yard. Sorry that is reality.

Home made incubators
A large one with a broody box built in.
I can nolonger deal with the 4 incubators I bought 5 years ago from a friendly feed, seed & hardward type store. For 5 years I messed with the water, not convienently placed. A hyper sensitive dial for warmer /cooler. And a month ago I lost 40 eggs due to a heating element going in one of the 4 and a month later I am dealing with again right at lockdown another incubator heating element quit with a full incubator during the night. Again! It is time to build my own. I have time to do it right. Not going for
Any new egg hatching this year and sold off most of my breeders as I am changing varieties of my chosen breed. Sold off the Jubilees and Mottled/Spangled EOs.
Switching over to Silver Laced, White laced Golds and Gold laced EOs.
Kept the Lavender Isabel Cuckoo and Red Crele Cuckoo. EOs. Last month on a Wednesday I lost 40 eggs the day of a three day Lockdown for hatching due to a heating element going. Turned that incubator into a broody box using a heating pad. Cleaned it and put it away. A month later Just this morning another incubator same thing. 4 weeks later. Going into lockdown with a full incubator. I took eggs out of cradle and into the bottom of incubator to turn it into a broody box when again, I noticed the Heating element went during the night. De ja vue! It was really weird and again it was a Wednesday morning for the same exact thing in almost the same exact way only 4 weeks later. I quickly grabbed the incubator that was shot a month ago and set it up and moved eggs and hoped the temp Was stable. These 4 incubators have been the bane of my hatching. The dial Is over sensitive the temp
Does not work I had ro buy new and insert in the beginning and the water wells are not located in a good place.
Time for a new and the big new are costly.
What about building.
Anyone built their own?
I have seen where some have built their own and are selling them. If they built them right and they work well, why are they selling them? I want a digital thermometer heat setter. I Have to build bc of costs.
Anyone with experience?

I've hatched over 500 eggs this year, and thousands between many different kinds of incubators, including several homemade incubators and hatchers. When I sell them, it's generally because I outgrew them or because travel with my day job requires more automation than my current equipment provides.

How many eggs do you want to incubate at once, how many do you want to hatch at once, and how hands-off does it need to be?

P.S. I would never, ever combine the brooder with the incubator or hatcher due to chick fuzz and manure pathogens. I don't even like to hatch in the incubator, I prefer a dedicated hatcher for ease of cleaning.

Cleaning them out inbetween uses helps.

I am not new to hatching. Been hatching over half a century. Just not happy with what I have
Had for the past 5 years.Looking for tried and true plans with a digital thermostat. Bought 4 about the same time because my other I sold in a move. The four I got cost somewheres around 125 + times four of them and they have been problematic.
Since I am retired and spending more time on my hobby I actually have less Time to spend on hobby. Will Look elsewheres but thanks
