Lost a wonderful Olive egger last night. My fight with the raccoons is BACK ON!!! They ripped her little body limb to limb. Poor girl. I had the windows closed, so didn't hear it. That's 2 chickens I've lost this week.
Back to good news, pic time.

The one on the left is BR X CCL roo. From my BR and CCL that got taken out by predators. I think he turned out pretty. No cream in the comb though.
One on the right is one of my copper marans. Love the copper marans, just wish their tail feathers were better looking.
Now baby pictures!!!!

The one DD is holding came from a byc friend in Maryland. CCL cockerel (?)
The others are just a few of the SS I got this year from Meyer Hatchery.

Thank goodness your flock is Okay. You have traps for raccoons too I hope. They say if a latch can be figured out by a 2-year-old it can be figured by a raccoon. I put double latches on coop doors now and a barrier infront of the door that I think a coon couldn't move (paranoia?) -- Some say marshmallows are good raccoon bait -- I have found small cans of dog food and eggs at the end of the trap work best. Also there are 'dog proof' in ground traps -- but at least the traps could be working while you had some time away.Drama this morning......I woke up to see the light from the coop door shining bright and door was wide open. I think I may have broke speed records running back there. Somehow, someway, it looks like all is well. The chickens were happy to get fed at 4am. There were tiny handprints where the predator (assumed it was raccoon) pryed the door open. On my way back to the house, I stopped at another pen and there was a opossum scaling over the top of the triangle pen. I had no idea those critters could move so fast. So, it's still out there, but I'm on guard til I have to leave for work. 2 more days at the bank!
Beercan, She's holding a CCL that one of my byc friends shipped from Maryland. Said to be a cockerel.....not so sure about that, but it doesn't look anything like my ccl pullets. We'll see!
There is a thread for recessive whites and BYC member duluthralphie is a big fan of them and really wants to grow a flock from what I understand. Thanks! I have noticed the chick has no crest. I'm figuring the breeder got mixed up & sent me either an easter egger, or possibly a bielefelder......which I am fine with.
I recently butchered some roosters & afterward found I had butchered a white sport CCL! Shoot! I would've kept him, had I realized. For breeding & educational purposes. I still have a white sport CCL hen though.
