I'm so sorry Maxx. It's a cute little chick, but maybe this is for the best.
Prettiest Frog had one like your little guy, named Tweeker. She had to put him down too just a short time ago. It seems that as they grow, the beak problems gets worse, until they can't eat on their own. That's a far worse way to go than euthanizing them would be. I'm just sorry that it had to happen at all. Makes you kind of wish that nature would have seen fit to end them while they're still in the egg, rather than give us the chance to become attached to them.
Does anyone have any idea of what causes this? Is it a calcium deficiency? Like rickets perhaps? Can anything be done early on if one discovers they have a similar hatching in their brood? I'd very much like to hear an answer or any ideas others might like to share on this. Especially if members have encountered this themselves and if they managed to solve the problem with any degree of success!
Let's just hope Dixie doesn't hatch out any more like that one Maxx....even though I'm sure she had nothing to do with it. That wasn't even her egg, was it?
Oh! BTW, thanks for the pics of the chicks from the first hatch! They're looking beautiful! I just love that little EE/BR roo! He's adorable!!
