Carbon monoxide has been used by some animal shelters to euthanize dogs. And they scream for about 20-30 minutes before they finally die.

Sounds lovely. I would never use CO or CO2 to kill anything if I had more instant options.

The only thing I personally will use CO2 for is euthanizing one of my fiance's pet rats, if it were to get too sick for a vet to help, since the vets here do a heart stick, which I am firmly against.

I have a way of euthanizing rats that probably would not fit what you'd find acceptable. Of course I do not keep them as pets either

I just don't like the heart stick because it's so easy to miss and puncture a lung, which makes for a very slow painful death.

I wonder why dogs would panic while humans don't even notice CO poisoning. Very interesting.. I'll have to read up on it some more.

Can you quote/cite a reputable reference? I've never heard CO causing dogs to scream for 20-30 minutes.

Look up gas chamber euthanasia, which is the use of carbon monoxide to euthanize shelter animals, which has been outlawed in at least most states for being inhumane because of the obvious stress it causes the animals.

I'll find sources for you if you don't feel like doing so when I get home from work.
