DIY HUMANE way to Kill Slaughter Chicken (Stun-kill, Gas)

This thread is eye-opening to the wide spectrum of folks on here.

A gas chamber for chickens? No judgment from me but it seems like a tremendous waste of time.

I care for my birds and give them the best environment and food that I can. Then I end their lives with a swift and violent movement. Using a killing cone is the most effective method for immobilizing birds that might otherwise break/bruise their bodies. A razor-like knife across the jugular followed 1/2 a second later by a snapped neck is far from painful or inhumane to the bird.

I would submit that anyone who cannot administer death by their own hands does not deserve to eat meat.

JJSS89- I would like a shorter very sharp knife and am looking for one. I do a kosher style kill, so maybe I should Google that too.

I'm sure many people wouldn't kill an animal
Even in desperate times
I certainly would find it as hard to kill an animal as I would to kill another human

If there was a law passed that I couldn't eat meet because I won't kill animals I'd not care
I'm not really a fan of meat, infact I tend to eat it out of convienience( husband loves his meat steak especially) we are also getting into horse meat here, we have a lot of ponies in the area and our local butcher is supplying us
Bit like vennison, heavy dark meat strong taste

I hear you Pinkaboo. Hopefully we will never come to the point where folks have to kill their animals or die. I think an empty, starving stomach can propel you to do things you never thought you would have been able to do. My family eats kosher, so ponies are out for us. :). I don't think my five-year-old girl would like to know that she's eating up any either. :)

There is quite a bit to a Kosher kill. Most of it is centered on rituals it looks like, like the knife blade isn't able to have any serrations or knicks on the edge and you have to inflate the lungs to see if they still hold air after the kill or it isn't Kosher.

Oops. I forget that I don't use the word kosher like some other folks do sometimes. I mean a strictly biblical form of slaughter. Rabbinical Judaism has added a lot of rules that aren't actually biblical. Basically, we don't strangle or beat animals to death, but make sure that the blood is drained from them. That happens via cutting with a knife, not electricuting or gassing.

Sounds about like my philosophy. I don't know anyone who strangles animals for butchering. Sounds sadistic and labor intensive.

Thank you for your input. According to Meta Given in The Encyclopedia of Cooking, puncture of the brain through the mouth is an instantaneous kill, followed by severing of both jugular veins for quick draining of blood. Dipping the bird in scalding water loosens the feathers for plucking. The carcass must be scrubbed thoroughly with baking soda, than refrigerated for several hours before removing the entrails. The cone method thoroughly restrains the bird with the head far enough out to get at the neck. I butcher in the basement at night after the bird has been without food for 12-18 hours. They are easier to catch and the other birds are not traumatized. I however have trouble mentally working up to the actual killing part. Once the brain is pierced though, the rest goes smoothly, but I am always sad to see anything die.

Why would you leave the entrails in the bird for that long? It takes forever for the carcass to cool down when it's full of hot guts.

FWIW, it is good that it is a little sad to you. You should have a connection like that.

Witnessing a humane death is not traumatizing to other birds. They don't process information like that.
