Decided to get some day old chicks. First time to do so during the winter. Needed to make an easy, inexpensive brooder. This is what I came out with.
Step 1: Get a large sized container.

Step 2: Trace a piece of notebook paper to make a hole in the lid.

Step 3,4,& 5: Cut out the hole, drill holes, and attach a piece of wire.

Step 7: Fill with shavings and a little hay.

Step 8: Don't forget the heat lamp!
Now we're ready for the chicks!

Nice brooder but, be sure to check often that it doesn't get much too hot under the light. There isn't much ventilation - some people leave have the entire top covered with wire - leaving half warm under the lights and half cooler - so chicks adjust by laying at either end.

Drumstick Diva is right there...you need to remove that other section of the lid of the brooder. It can cause over heating. The lid of the brooder needs to be open and only covered with a screen or wire for good heat and oxygen exchange.

Good luck with your new babies and enjoy BYC!

Be sure to add a couple inexpensive thermometers. One under the light and one at the far end. Be sure the amount of heat is sufficient under the light, and that there is room to escape the heat if it is too much on the other end. Run it without chicks first to see how the heat distribution works out.

Welcome and best of luck!

Thanks for the tips! I'm getting the chicks on Wednesday, so between now and then I will monitor the temp and adjust if needed.
