In regards to the air hole - think about how you will refill the bottle. If you decide to use the existing bottle and add a hole in the top, then make the hole large enough to use a funnel to fill it.

Ive just put a slice in it, i can fill it then tip back over without loosing much if any. But good idea if i wasnt going to remove the bottle. Just trialing the chicks with it now...

They dont spill much at all, i tried small stones and such but it makes them unsteady, ive put a bit of folded paper towel in there to absorb any spills.
