Hello newbie here in Saratoga springs NY🤗. I’m looking for a DIY essential oil recipe “spray” for my coop…. I noticed that there are a lot of essential oil sprays available out there and they’re quite expensive. I think it would be easier if I could make a jug of it myself. What do you use? Are there any essential oils that are toxic to chickens? Thank you✌🏻

Peppermint is good at keeping raccoons, opossums and some other critters away. It is also antibacterial. You can use the peppermint found in the spice section of the grocery store. Mix a few drops in a spray bottle with regular tap water. Shake. It doesn't bother the chickens. A determined, hungry, predator might soldier through it, but they usually won't.

Chickens don't really get fleas and ticks like mammals do. However, they do get mites and lice and these are often brought in by wild birds and other animals like rodents. So the best bug preventative for chickens is a a secure coop and a dust bath (dirt, sand, wood ash, and/or peat moss). If an infestation were to occur a couple dustings of permethrin dust should take care of it. I've only dealt with two mite infestations in the 16 years I've kept chickens.

Thank you
