I get concerned about them scuffling around or flying up to get away from another bird in close quarters and stepping in an open bowl by accident. I just don't like to take the chance.

Great idea for winter use! I have some old tires and can get my hands on old mats...just may have to steal this from you!

When we were living in México we used old tires to feed cows, pigs and chickens too.

Here is a draw but the center was filled with concrete.

I totally agree with you, I cringe whenever I see posts about nipple systems.

I have never used the nipple systems.... I just have a couple 5 gallon chicken waterers (one inside the coop and one out) that work just fine... my chickies definitely prefer to drink out of the dogs dish that sits on our deck by our sliding glass doors-- hands down!!!
