DIY Thread - Let's see your "Inventions".

Definitely not a new invention or thought but I have been sprouting Organic Alfalfa seeds in a large jar and growing Omega 3 Forage mix from groworganic.com for my 6 chickies over the winter. I had my husband build these boxes out of reclaimed lumber from an old barn and wire from the corn-crib so that my chickies could not destroy the root system of the plants. They devour one of these boxes in minutes!

Doesn't the freezing weather kill the plant roots anyway?

No-- the boxes aren't out there long enough for that-- I grow them in the house by the windows and since we are under "feet" of snow-- these fresh greens are a real treat. They eat it within minutes whether I put it in the run or in the coop itself. I just bring it back in within the hour and begin watering it again and it begins growing back up!

That is so cool. I do the same thing outside during spring, summer and fall, bec mine isn't portable, but now you give me the idea for the portable one for winter. Thank you so much. Here's my outdoor one.

Yes!!! I saw some outside ones and that is what made me want inside ones!!!!! LOVE YOURS! My girls get to free range on most days but I am still planning on doing this (more similar to yours!) in their run so they have something left of it when they are stuck in there on days we are out of town...

I see, how many days do you let it regrow before feeding it to them again?
What kind of growing medium (soil?) are they planted in?
How long does a 'patch' continue to regrow.....will it not regrow after a time do you think?
Sorry for all the questions

I plan on some grazing frames for the run this spring. For winter greens I just grow wheat fodder and give them the whole thing after 5-7 days.

Also-- not really an invention but just a little something we did for the girls to eliminate some of the drafts from coming in when the "pop" door is open in the cool whether. It is just thick vinyl from the craft store cut into strips-- the chickies do not hesitate to go through it!

The shop I worked at used these during the winter on the big roll up doors, they're also widely used in cold storage facilities. I considered trying this but with the temps being relatively mild here I decided not to bother. I would think it would keep the temps up in the coop a few degrees for those back in cold country.

I am planning my first coop, I live alone also so I am concerned about the caring of these creatures I would like to have in my company. I am very fussy about who I keep company with. LOL anyway how long have you been eggging and can you suggest anything new for an new egger? like me in Egg Harbor Wi??

I have seen these large ones at the grocery store going into the cooling area. Can I make them myself? How thick is that plastic do you think? Great idea over the nesting boxes in winter.
