I am not sure who posted but I seen where someone did the regular PVC feeder but then drilled holes with a hole saw along the length of the "catch trough" at the bottom.

I haven't actually seen that one, I have seen the one where they cut out a large portion of the PVC pipe at the bottom but that other design just looked easier. No cutting involved.

I was thinking about the one with holes too, I just haven't seen a picture of that here. I may have missed it though.

That may have been me.

Are you referring to this feeder?

That might be the one but I can't see if those are holes cut in the bottom or if that is the kind that there is a long rectangle shape cut off the top? The rectangle kind is the option I was originally thinking about doing, but holes may cut down on waste.....?

I cut holes in mine. very little waste of food. there are 3 holes in this one. 2 weeks of using it so far and very little waste of food.

Seems like a good idea. I wonder how long it would take chickens to learn how to love a moving roost? I wonder if it would work with a ladder style roost that is hinged at the back...hmmm!
What happens if they get spooked at night and they panic?
They open the door to whatever spooked them.

What comes after panic ?

Yeah, DH says it's cool but not practical for that reason.
I want something automatic, yet frugal. *sigh*
Howabout photo eyes around the inside of the coop. Hens hop down start walking around photo eye is interupted and tells the coop door to open.

Or you could just use a timer.... LOL.

Or how about having a platform for the coop that once it compressed so much would pull a pin allowing the weight to pull the door open....
