DIY Thread - Let's see your "Inventions".

Not really an invention. But I build a custom brooder lid for a 60 gallon bin that I bought at Walmart for about 18$. Glad I made it too. If you look at the bottom right you see a golden comet chick that loves to fly up on top of the feeder and given a chance out... The poor little broilers cant understand why those chicks fly up so easily, but they flap and jump as hard as they can and cant clear ground...

Cayenne pepper is supposed to help, but will not keep or get them worm free. I also tried brewers yeast on my dog and it didn't work, but its very good for ducks, geese,& even chickens.
I have the book Fresh Eggs Daily and she recommends different things to feed to keep worms away. I think pumpkin is one of them. I will need to see. Herbs are good for a lot of things too.

What SHE said.

This video may help folks understand how this heating pad will be utilized and just how many "drafts" they can stand. I usually put mine out on free range by 2 wks...

This lady does her chicks much like I do:

That is a neat idea. I bought a heat plate. I bought baby parrots years ago and the breeder just laughed about people keeping their birds draft free (even as adults). She kept her babies warm but didn't worry about drafts. She pointed out that when a bird flies it gets pretty drafty. :)

Nice lid. :) I have kitties that I need to keep out of my brooder. I'm using a box inside my metal dog crate. I'm putting plastic garden netting around it to keep the babies in. I need to get my coop built ASAP so they can go outside as soon as the weather permits. My chicks are coming the end of the month. :)

Love the ideas with the heating pads - both Bee's and the lady in the video but I have a question....where in the world do you find heating pads that DON'T have the automatic shut-off feature? I wanted one that stays on a few weeks ago for a totally different reason, and I just couldn't find one!

Walmart! Sunbeam brand, has 6 settings and a feature for auto shut off in 2 hrs or to stay on indefinitely. Good price, too.

Gonna pack the cooler for another trip to Walmart then....how in the heck did I miss that?? Betcha I just saw the "auto shutoff" on the box and didn't look further to see that I could turn that feature off!! Thanks!!!

For people not interested in braving the crowds at a local walmart - it looks like this one on amazon is similar to the one that beekissed is describing. If you're a prime member, it's $16 with free 2 day shipping.

[EDIT] Sounds like this is not like the one beekissed is describing. It's a plastic one with fabric cover and doesn't have as many settings...

Looks like THIS one is probably closer to what she got http://www.amazon.com/Sunbeam-2013-...F8&qid=1394726532&sr=8-3&keywords=heating+pad - $35 on amazon prime [/edit]

You would put this in the brooder box on one side and the chicks could come and go from underneath as they needed. Just like a real broody. Very good design, and MUCH cheaper than a name brand brooder heater. These heaters are actually a lot better for chicks then lights because its more natural and simulates a real hen. Chicks grow and feather out faster with hens and brooder heaters than with heat lamps. :)

Thank you so much!! I didn't understand how it would be used. Sounds great. You educated me on something I had not heard of.

Ordinarily I'd jump on that like a chicken on a grasshopper, but strange as it sounds a trip to Walmart is an occasion here! LOL It's a gorgeous drive...mountains on all sides as we go. Deer, antelope, bald eagles.....it's 50 miles one way, so it pretty much takes a chunk out of the day. Then we usually run other errands while we're there so it's not a trip just for one thing. And we get lunch or dinner while we're there! Woot woot!

I ordered that and it's not anything like the one at Walmart. I sent it back. It's one of those plastic ones with a slip on cover and it doesn't have the number of settings as the other one, so not as easy to hold to a certain temperature~I couldn't get it to hold on the desired temp with the settings that were available. I'd give it a pass.
