Built a meat chick feeder today out of scraps of wood and wire and also set up my heating pad brooder system in anticipation of getting 10 meat chicks tomorrow. This will be out in an open air coop with the bigger birds.

Here is the small feed trough next to the bigger one built from my Dad's old miter box....

And the heating pad brooder heater...just more wire fencing with the heating pad bungeed onto the under surface and covered with a cheap, stretchy fleece pillow case to protect it from getting too messy...

In the brooder...

Covered over with fresh hay....

Now ya see it, now ya don't.....it has a front and back entrance and I'm currently measuring temps under there and what they will be in the cool of the night and early morning.

Hey Oz.... How high do you have to make the tin on the outside to keep rats out? Was ot 18 inches or 24 inches? I seem to remember you doing that on your coops and trees.

I need to rat proof my carport and I had an idea the other day. You cant park a car in the desert like for storage... because the rats move in and eat the wires.

I use flat sheet GI

On the trees we use 12 inches. On the coops they put 18 inches.

Its very effective.

After we put it on the trees, the rats that come down would fall and none could climb up. It was like a sci-fi movie as thousands of rats tried to find new homes.

There are still rats in the trees. They can live up there for generations - but coconut losses from rats are minimal now.

Thanks Oz.... I am going to be buying a roll of galvanized to rebuild the Hose pipe surrounds. Here we only have a few days out of the year that freezing pipes are an issue but I dont want to take a chance. The previous owners set a four by four to support the hose bib pipe that comes out of the ground then they took galvanized sheet and made a pipe around the hose and the four by four and stapled the tin to the four by four. then they filled it up with sand. Protects the pvc from sun too.

but I was figuring..... If I move back up to the house one of the issues parking the truck up there is rodent invasion.... Cool night warm engine and Oh look at those wires are they good to eat. I even had them get into the AC ducts of the truck. There have been times when I pulled to a stop at a stop light and see one beat feet to the center divide.....LOL So I was thinking of building a flat area with a low fence around it for parking and covering the outside of that fence with Galvanized sheet. Of course I would have to make it so no one could dig under too.

Looking forward to this. Hope it works as good as it looks. I want to try this

Good Morning Deb!

When Ken and I were living in a motorhome, we had rat/squirrels eating the wires. We were told to put hot sauce on the wires. We did and it worked. Now that we have our own place, we put it on the tractor wires and leave little cottonballs with hot sauce on it.

Lisa :)
