DIY Thread - Let's see your "Inventions".

Not an invention but a way to help with your inventions on the cheap side. We have a local motorcycle dealer that gets ATV's shipped in in large crates. These crates are covered in Tyvek and the tops are made frome 1x4's and 1x6's and the bottoms are made from 2x3's and 2x4's. The best part is they will give them away, free. It takes a little work to tear them apart but there is a wealth of free, usable material in them. Check around in your area for some of these or something similar. Free is good!

What a great idea. Cheap is good, free is better.

How large are these? I think they might make a great small sleeping coop for a breeding pen if they're large enough...using them as the box raised off the ground.

Another source of material is Sheet metal shops that build for Airconditioning ducting. they get their sheet metal on pallets that are ten feet long and four feet wide. When i found out that they just cut them up and threw them away I had one shop load them up on my truck. They are made of one by sixes for the cross pieces but the real gold is the length is created by four by four by tens.... about three to four of them. Crap wood lots of cracks.... but free.

They also make pallets that are four by eight with a top of three quarter inch plywood.... for sheet steel... the heavy stuff. I built a tack shed floor with three of those.

Another source of materials is garage door people. The old garage dooors get replaced with lighter weight sheet metal doors. Yet old garage doors are eight by nine for a singe car and sixteen by eight for a double. The last ones I got were single car doors. They were made of 5/8 thich plywood with framing,.... you can litterally stand them up to support posts and nail them on for run in sheds or chicken coop walls.

Here is a little coop I made from a snowmobile crate for some temporary housing. The local dealership gives them away, so we got three. I haven't done anything with the other two yet.
