Dk RI. Reds vs RI. Reds vs Dark RI.Reds

There is only one Rhode Island Red.
There are 2 types/varieties of Rhode Island Reds. They are the Single and Rose Comb.
With the more common Single Comb Rhode Island Red you get variations and other breeds..
Production Reds, "Hatchery" Reds, New Hampshire, Sex-Linked ect. Now from those variations and breeds you can get more variations and breeds....
The New Hampshire and Production Reds where developed solely (no other breed added) from the Rhode Island Red and to a point a variation of the RIR but they are a breed and not a type of RIR... Now there are some people say that there is a variation of the Production Red breed that has Leghorn blood added to it.....
The Rhode Island Reds you get from Hatcheries ("Hatchery" Reds) are a variation of the RIR and to me closer to a Production than the true RIR...
There are even some variations in the color of the Exhibition Reds, Some are Dark Red and some are a Lighter Red it depends on how the breeder interprets the Standard of Perfection when it says that The RIR color should be "Lustrous, rich, dark red"...
The Standard of Perfection has the description of what a RIR should look like as of 1904 for the Single Comb variety and 1905 for the Rose Comb variety.
Exhibition Reds that are bread to the Standard of Perfection is what would be called a "True" Rhode Island Red. The others are variations and/or "spin off" breeds.

I had been woundering about this. I have some hatchery reds, they are ok, but if I could get my hands on the real deal

There are a few "real deals" in here.....if you can do some searches, you will be able to find some true RIR breeders.

I was thinking some of the strains such as the Tomahawk lines would be the rich red and another line would carry the dark bay red color.

I prefer the true RIRs dark or rich red in colors, not the hatchery production reds.

The first clue to look into the hatchery's RIRs "bred for production"......it is a production red, not a true RIR.

There are some great breeders of Red on the Red forum I posted that will help you get started in the right direction..
Some lines you might want to look into are-
Mohawk, Greg Chamness, Dick Horstman, Don Nelson, Underwood, Dennis Myers (not the hatchery)

I been useing a Hortsman and Myers line and they have been doing well....

True RIR's and Dark RIR are the same...they are Rhode Island Reds as per the APA and ABA standard. Yes their is a variation in color from strain to strain but that can be changed in only a couple of generations. When I set up my breeding pens I have to match lighter with darker and visa versa. This way I hope to be able to achieve the optimal dark red. One problem that I have and quite a few others face is too dark. My line has produced a good number of too dark...this is either from too much black in the neck and other areas or to just overall dark red feathers. The problem that I have with the too dark red colored birds is their feathers tend to fray much easier than a shade lighter. So yes you can have them too dark!

Good to see you over here at BYC. I see you at CROhio from time to time..

Are the "true" and "dark" RIRs any nicer than production reds? My roo was NASTY and all the hens except one were mean to the other birds. My rocks and wyandottes finally grew their feathers back after I got rid of mine.
Having the abundance of eggs was great, but my flock looked like crap.
