Dk RI. Reds vs RI. Reds vs Dark RI.Reds

Quote:
Ok..
First Production Reds are a breed of there own just like the New hampshire.
Yes there are a Single comb and a Rose comb RIR.
There are many variations in color and size in any breed do to the breeder, quality of breeding stock, feed/nutrition and genetics.

Everyone has there opinion what a true Red looks like. I believe like others that the true Rhode Island Red is described quite well in the Standard of Perfection and should be a Bing cherry color or blood red even a rich dark mahogany color.... Remember that the Red Malay Game that is said to give the RIR is color was quite dark...

actually the new hampshire was created from true rir's with no other blood added, just breeding best to best. the new hampshire is lighter colored and matures faster than the true rir. when i went to buy some true rir this summer i found out that many people have production reds and call them rir's. the true ones that i bought were nice birds but not as dark as i was looking for. this spring i will buy an extremely dark roo to cross on my hens and should end up with show quality birds that lay good too.

Well I just want to Thank You All for post all the right Information about the RI Reds and Dk RI Reds lots of great stuff here. I'm learning alot about the RI RED History from my question . Again Thank to each and everyone of you for posting your knowleged about them .I love all the picture also,

Keep them coming Ya'll

Thanks Alan

Dark exhibition RIR have this colour due to a combination of Wheaten,Mahogany and recessive black.
The production RIR ,which are more of an orange red, are Wheaten & Mahogany but do not have recessive black.
New Hampshires, a bright golden red,and are derived from the RIR,have Wheaten, Mahogany and Dilute, no recessive black.
All came from the same original stock, in fact RIR, Buff Rocks & Buff Wyandottes all came out of the same breeding pen

Isnt that what I said back on page 2 post 12 when I said
The New Hampshire and Production Reds where developed solely (no other breed added) from the Rhode Island Red and to a point a variation of the RIR but they are a breed and not a type of RIR...

?

The body color isnt the only thing that makes a RIR a RIR. Body ( the brick shape ), eye color (Red Bay), Leg color (Rich Yellow tinged in horn), beak color (Reddish Horn) Wing color...

If you think about the "True Rhode Island Red" may not even be around any more.. Around 1904 there was 3 varieties of RIR's A single, Rose and a Pea comb. The Pea comb variety never made it into the standard and disappeared...

Single Comb-
Originated from crossing the Red Malay Game, Leghorn and Asiatic native stock in 1904. The single comb variety was admitted into the American Standard of Perfection as a distinct breed of poultry.

Rose Comb-
Adimitted into the American Standard of Perfection 1905, all though some breeders acclame it to be the original varity of Rode Island Red.
Originated from crossing breeds like Chittagong or Cochin China Blood that where clean legged, Red and Buff type Malay fowl, Red Shanghais...
