Dk RI. Reds vs RI. Reds vs Dark RI.Reds

I must have 2 of the types. "Fanny", now 2 1/2, has a small, single comb. Her 7 sisters, now nine months old, have really big single combs, that vary in size. It seems like the most aggressive sisters have the largest combs. What gives? Are my birds all mixed up? I got Fanny (and her 5 brothers) at an auction, and they came as a clutch in a shoebox. I bought her sisters at a farm supply store that orders through McMurrary hatcheries. None of them them are very dark, and the 3 brothers who, ahem, went to freezer camp, had only dark green tail feathers, no dark saddle feathers.
BTW, Fanny isn't afraid of my dog, Rose--she went after her last night in the new digs--the barn stall, for the winter housing. But the others run from her. Fanny is definitely bottom of Their pecking order. I'm confused...anybody!?!?!?

thats true , i forgot the rose comb rir so there are 4 varieties.

There is only two (2) varieties of Rhode Island Reds... The Single Comb and the single comb..

No! Read the Standard. The American Standard of Perfection gives the description of the True Rhode Island Red..
I don't know where you are getting you information on RIR's but it incorrect...

Chris I know you meant to say two varieties Single comb and Rose comb

There may be other birds identified as Rhode Island Red that do not look like the standard but in terms of varieties there are two. SC & RC

I didn't even see that.. That is what I meant ( Single comb and Rose comb ).. lol
Right there may be other birds identified as Rhode Island Red..
I guess a better way for me to word that would be.-
There is only one (1) Rhode Island Red breed and there are two (2) varieties the Single comb and the Rose comb but there are many variations of the true Rhode Island Red...

Chris

chris 09, the true rir red is a mahogony colored, large bird while the dark rir is a variation that some people are breeding towards. you can buy production reds, rose comb reds, true rir's or dark rir's from certain hatcheries. if you count that up it equals 4!

Great info Chris. I thought I would share a few pictures of some cockerels I have.
