Do all chicken fly?

I am afraid to clip wings as they need to avoid predators. I cannot make my birds defenceless. If you want to have a non flying breed avoid Sumatra. These guys can fly my entire yard is only one acre but they fly across it easily.

I’ve read that even if you clip both their wings Sumatras can still fly up to 6 feet off the ground.

The 2 girls I have clipped a wing on have a nest on top of a rooster pad that is more than 4 feet high. They have no problem getting there, jump flap squawk and over to the nest box,, point is with a clipped wing they still can get away or even over a fence.

It comes down to the way the wings are clipped. You can keep anything grounded if you remove enough flight surface.

We need to have a jumping bird contest with standardized rules. Then you will learn to distinguish between jumping and thrust assisted jumping.

No, not all chickens can fly. Some meat breeds for example can’t really fly; some can jump with wing assistance.
The breed of chicken gives some indication for its propensity to take wing. All the bantams here fly, some make 30 feet up and travel 50 to 60 yards in the air easily. The Marans here will get off the ground under pressure but don’t really fly.

Chickens that live outside of a secure coop or run had better know how to fly. Flying is a chickens' first defense against foxes, coyotes, and almost every other Earth based animal that eats chickens. I have personally witnessed pullets flying 40 feet straight up into a sycamore tree when they were threatened by a grown dwelling predator.

When choosing the breed of chicken that you wish to keep free range first decide how well that chicken can defend itself by flying and then balance that against how much you are willing to spend to build a coop, pen, or run that they can't fly out of.

I was gifted an EE as she walked up in the guys drive, her wings were both severely clipped. I accepted her and soon found she could jump at least 8 feet straight up.
As to lift, how much lift do you get flapping your arms, thats all she would have got. Poor girl!
I did find the issue, she had feathers covering her eyes, everything that moved was a predator. Once these feathers were clipped I sat her down, her head held high. She spots the rooster she had been running for her very life from, ran straight to him and squatted! Was he proud boy then,,,
