Do all coop's have to be pretty?

Quote:
Function is the most important thing. If it's flimsy and not safe against predators, it doesn't matter how adorable it looks.

That said, we have a cute coop because ours is very near the road, and there's a bed & breakfast on one side, and three neighbors rent out their waterview houses for big bucks to summer tourists. So we and our chicken area had better look mighty neighborly.

[and I'm a girly person too, like Southern Gardener!]

This is the one I was referring to. lmao... standing by butt ugly.

What does it say about me that I don't really see it as being particularly ugly? In fact it bears more than a passing resemblance to my horse barn (which, mind, I did not build, but we bought the property with it there and haven't done anything about it)

Actually I quite like the use of the curved culvert section towards the right side of the photo. It 'matches' the corrugated siding. And the siding matches the roof. And the roof matches the extra corrugated tin stacked next to the coop. Oh, and the heap o bricks matches the color of the culvert section.

Quite the matchy-matchy coop, really, in its own sort of way

Pat, laughing, but genuinely not thinking the coop is 'ugly', although certainly it is not yuppie in any way either <vbg>

Pat, you better get your contact lens prescription checked... (ha,ha, no harm meant to Edster, our very own New Zealand chicken person!)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, But my eye sees butt ugly. lol My opinion only.

Not only that but hey it lacks preditor control, so for me it is worthless.

Buff I am with you on pretty functional and safe.

I enjoy having pride in what I do. Whatever makes you happy. Cute makes me happy.

I think that ugly/cute is also a matter of opinion.. but we must all come to the same order of priorities right?

protection from predators
protection from weather
protection from disease

and if it can look good along the way then that's good to No? but still last in the order of priorities

I'm more of a fan of functional and plain...

I'd rather watch the chickens hang out and listen to the wind blow.. than consider aesthetics. To me, aesthetically pleasing is clean and functional.. not a color or style.

Oh I have an ugly coop too................... but its BIG and WORKS and my chickens are spoiled anyway.
Its a dang sight better than being in a tiny little cage all their lives.

I completely agree and when one chooses pretty as well, all the better, chickens may not care, but the pride of ownership is reward in itself.

ALso, If I were selling any living animal, the conditions of which it would be living plays a MAJOR role in whether or not I place with them or Not.

I always consider the health care, feed and environment of where my babies go. A coop that is barely standing, drafty, no preditor protection or poorly constructed, materials inferior, would make my decision very easy.
Just once again, MY opinion and thoughts. We all have them.
