My Buff Orpington just laid for the first time yesterday, but she has never squatted. I was hoping she would squat so she'd be easier to pick up! She's my hardest to catch chicken.

My BLR Wyandotte started squatting about a week before she laid, and she's been a very consistent layer.

My Barred Rock has been squatting for seven weeks. She laid a few eggs in a few days after about the first 10 days of squatting. But then she stopped laying and hasn't for 5 weeks, but she still squats all the time.

I’m not sure even having roosters has much to do with it. Mine won’t squat for me, and run from my roosters. The poor boys have to chase them full on across the whole back yard before the hens will allow mating to occur.

We have a GLW who never squats, our White crested black polish doesn't do it either. I tend to associate it with personality. The hyper vigilant chickens never squat for me. The ones that tend to be in the human obsessed to mellow range squat instantaneously 😁.
