Ok i ordered murray mcmurrays rare pullet collection or whatever its called. All pullets, rarest of rare. Well all the durned chicks look identical, well ok not all, just 15!!!!!!! They are some kinda goldish and black types, cant post pics from my phone, so i cant ask for help there. Well alot of them have beards, like EE's. Well on feathersite i noticed a buttercup roo with a black beard. So can they? I dont belive any of the chicks have single combs, so im *pretty sure* i didnt get a bunch of EEs. Which would be kinda crappy, EEs are not rare, and mm's EEs are bred for production, Therefore, I feel should not be included in a "rare" assortment of any kind. Kinda bummed by the assortment either way. Last years order ended up being all roosters!( minus the 8 i lost out if 25) So i think im done with assortments, lol.
Any help? The breeds could be gold penciled hamburgs, redcap, and buttercup. I dont think i have any wyanadottes, all have slate legs. Thanks!

The golden penciled hamburgs and the buttercups will look similar. The hamburgs will have a rose comb and the buttercups will have the buttercup (or sometimes called coronation) comb. Neither have beards though.

Some Polish can have beards. I'm not familiar with Redcaps.

Hi. I know this is a very old post, but I too ordered the assortment of layers from Murray McMurray of the Rare and Unusual breeds. I got at least six different breeds and was happy with mine. I lost 4 out of 50. I think the EE's are considered "unusual" since they lay tinted eggs; just guessing. I only got a few roosters out of 50 hens that I ordered.

I had so much trouble identifying them. It was both fun, but at times, frustrating! I finally decided to wait until they grew up. Some are breeds I won't keep, but overall, I've really been pleased. I am sorry your experience was not as good.

Did you get a Buttercup? I have a Redcap rooster, maybe. I am trying to find out of they have beards, as he does. He is gorgeous, but not sure if I just happened to get a gorgeous EE roo or if he is another breed. Not sure how long it takes to develop their comb fully. Can't tell if it is a Redcap, or Rose comb type, yet.

Anyway, glad you posted. Did you order anymore this year?
