Do/can turtles eat chicks?

Thanks all! :) I appreciate all of the info/education! :) Now to figure ouot how the little bugger got in there! hehe

i love box turtles. i used to have one as a pet when i was a kid. orange with dark brown and black spots and tops of the scales. this was before they were put on the endangered list. its craqzy though i see them all the time here in east texas

Funny you should mention turtles. I almost lost my finger to this guy last month. He can stick his neck out a good foot really fast! This is actually a smaller snapper than I usually have around here... One like this can really do a number on chicks.

Turtles dig into the ground. Our box turtle would dig about to 10 inches down and pull the dirt back onto herself. They will also tunnel under a fence. Raccoons love love love to eat turtles but I think you would have found chick parts if a raccoon dropped it? Also Birds of prey and cranes will take them but normally only small ones. Don't know if any of this helps. Oh yes box turtles eat bugs and plants or fruits and vegys. I just cant see a box turtle going after a chick or anything of that size. They cant eat a whole one. They have a beak type of mouth not teeth. maybe you have a small hole in the fence and thats how the chicks got out and the box turtle got in?

LOL, Cindy! You picked it up with a shovel!

Like previously stated, they dig, and dig really well! Did you check around the base of the run and see if there were any holes? Sorry if you did, I just skimmed the posts.

Not, yet. Have been working all day. Will do it later today.

*I* didn't pick it up with a shovel. Jordan did! I was not sure if it was a snapping turtle so no way was I sticking my hand down near it an J begged to "get rid of it" by moving it with a shovel so who am I to stop him?

I concur. If something that size could get in, I'm sure those tiny little birdies could find a way out. Durn lil buggers always do.

Just curious as to the age of your son because my 5 yr old is always catching frog, turtles, and such. When he catches them, they usually end up someplace they are not supposed to be. I actually had a loose turtle in my house about a month ago for a week b4 we found it behind the toliet.
