I have seen just the tips or back part of a large comb become dark when there was nothing wrong, only to become red shortly after. In cold weather my roster's comb will get a little darker on the tips during cold weather, perhaps from a circulation problem. Are you in a cold area where frostbite could be a problem? Pictures can sometimes help. Does the chicken seem to be alert and active enough? Dehydration can cause weakness and lethargy, and even lameness in later stages. It could also cause some darkening
