Do chickens cough?

Do you hear like a guttural rumbling before he makes the sound?

Does he have any symptoms of respiratory illness? Mucous, watery eyes, facial swelling, etc.?
Check inside his beak just to make sure it's clear of mucous, lesions, obstructions and canker.
I would also check the crop first thing in the morning before he eats/drinks - see that it's empty.

Can you answer the above questions? Also how long has he been making the noise and does he only do it at certain times like during/after eating/drinking?

Hi @Loveariver :frow Welcome To BYC
Can you take a video of your rooster so we can hear the noise he is making? (upload to youtube, then provide us a link)

Hopefully with video or photos and a little more information, we can give you better suggestions.

Yes he does have the "air going out of a pipe" thing as well, and that same sound after his "cough"

If he is making a noise like that and there is no canker or obstruction inside his beak, then my best guess would be he has a respiratory illness. Which one, it would be hard to know. Mycoplasma, Infectious Bronchitis, ILT and Infectious Coryza are fairly common.
Antibiotics can be used to treat secondary infection - can you seek vet care?

He started about a week ago, and was doing it itermitantly throughout the day, even after going up to roost at the end of day.
Somehow today though, I've heard much less of it. Hope it's on the mend. His appetite I think is about the same...the neighborhood birds play a big part in the diminishing of his

I've uploaded a video to You Tube...
Have you heard this before?
I must say since we last spoke he has improved a lot. Hardly hearing this anymore

He's a nice big boy!

That is a cough, I would look inside his beak for any obstructions, canker or lesions.
I do hear the crackle in the breathing as well.
It's good that he is doing better, but if he doesn't improve quickly, it would be best to seek vet care to see if he needs antibiotic treatment.

Thank you. I will try to look in his beak....will possibly be a 2 man operation cause he's not gonna sit still for that.
I'll give him a little more time to see how things go because he hardly coughed today and he seems more energetic than he was a few days ago. His appetite is not up to 100% yet, but he is eating.

Please keep us posted.

Some of the respiratory diseases are caused by viruses. A few are bacterial, and may respond to an antibiotic. If you notice he develops facial or eye swelling with sticky or pus drainage, then try to get an antibiotic such as tylosin, doxycycline, denagard, or baytril.
