Do chickens get to know their name??

Mine all come when I call their name.....of course they all have the same name...here chicky chicky!!!!

Actually one has a name, his name is Harley.

My rooster seems to know his name. When I say "Onslo" he comes running. When I say "Onslo, go to bed" he goes up the ramp to the coop no matter what time of day it is. None of the girls respond to their names though...but shake a cup full of scratch and you have their undivided attention.

My peeps understand, "Time to go home," means they are done with free-range time. And 25% of the time they run like heck as deep into the woods as they can get!
The other 75% of the time they head towards the tractor like well-trained circus animals. Except for Thing 1, who prefers to be first out, last into the tractor.

When they are behaving and friends are over, the friends are VERY impressed with our chicken wrangling.

Most of ours seem to respond to their names; at least the ones we've had around a while. Vanilla Bean loves to steal bird food out of the feeder; if I see her from inside the house I can call to her from inside without opening the window and say Vanilla Bean, get down...she will jump and hop down. (She is not afraid of us but we're pretty sure she knows she's not supposed to steal bird food...)

I have a hard time believing that chickens know their names. I would believe they have been conditioned to "People = feeding time/food", but names...That's a tough sell for me...

Mine know that CHICK CHICK means treats are comin!

I also talk to them more as a whole - and then I talk to the "girls"

The reaction to CHICK CHICK and GIRLS when I call is different - the chick chick gets attention and RUNNING from all directions -

The GIRLS - will get them LOOKING at me but not running to me!

I think our Rooster thinks his name means NO... his name is Kurnal - and when we yell at him for doing something, we shout KURNAL!!!! ANd he stops.

The only chicken I ever had that knew it's name ever was a big old RIR rooster that I called Harry!!..That old boy would come running everytime to me when I would call him...Haven't had a chicken do that ever before or since...except here chick chick....lol
