Do chickens know they are different?

mine go by age and then breed...even as day old

It is true that birds of a feather flock together, but it has more to do with color and pattern than chickens having allegiance to their breed.

My nine-year old Light Brahma likes to lounge around with my eight-year old SLW. Both are shades of grey and black and white. My Black Cochin is most often alone, but she seems quite content with being the only Black girl. The Welsummers can often be seen sunning themselves all lined up in a perfect row like a food display.

I can't answer how they know what they each look like though, since they have no mirror and probably wouldn't know who was looking back at them from it.

Although anything's possible I originally started out with 5 silkie chicks and 1 polish/silkie mixed chick all the same age. The mixed chick very obvious she was different from the others however when I tried to place her with others like her breed she did not fit in...she believes herself to be one of the silkies or at least she knows she belongs in that flock...they are thicker than thieves and you will never see any of them away from the group so in my opinion it probably matters who is hatched and raised together that a strong bond is formed and attempting to place the different chicken with her own breed was a big negative
