Do chickens need night lights?

4w probably not enough.
Needs to be bright enough for you to read a newspaper at roost level.
....and needs to be on a timer, so they get at least 8 hours of dark time a night.
Here's a pretty good article on supplemental lighting
The timer part I hadn't thought of.. have some from I'll fated grow experiment.. and a whole lot of 5000 Lumen LED work lights still in the box... I just want them to see the feed.. Wish to avoid altering their egg laying in winter.. They just freeze usually, haven't had a single one in two weeks.. Of course I have made some changes to both egg house and roost.. recently. Chickens like myself do not like change and become surly. Thank you again!

Dark corner... I even have an issue as of late. 'Darkest Winter' and all.. I think literally. The big door stays open in the good season.. It has a 2' by 2' glass window covered with hardware cloth (Likely why the Jersey's haven't broke this one).. and a tiny entrance when closed.. It's now closed for the season as I will be.. Finally some time to clean and organize.. bake some bread and experiment with new recipes and preserving methods.. 3000 sq ft of single guy home.. You can only imagine the chaos.. I'm just one guy.

Why can't they see the feed during the day when they are awake anyway?

Then don't add any artificial light.
That has been the thought.. and with patience they may adjust.. will see.. It's never been a problem in the past, but I moved it.

I'm late to the party and didn't read all posts. I use a night light when dark hours are long. November -March. I got eggs on my poop board as they could not see to get in the nest box.. I use Mr. Beam stair light. Low soft led light photo cell on off. Battery operated that lasts six months off two AA. One in the nest box and one under the lowest roost bar. No more eggs on the poop board. She lays at 6am every day.
