Probably a dumb question from the Oregon newbies?

Do chickens sweat? Yesterday it hit 100 degrees and we took a fan out to get some air movement around our hen and chicks. They hated it. They all got as far away as possible and let us know their lack of appreciation. As soon as we turned the fan off, they calmed down. Geuss a fan would only help if the birds sweat, but we thought any air movement might be appreciated? Not!!!

Great name and welcome.

No, chickens don't sweat. But don't give up on the fan. Chickens will self regulate to where they are comfortable. moving from warmer to colder spots and back to warmer as they see fit. A few weeks ago it got to 103 here in Seattle, warmer inland where I am. My chickens didn't even seem to notice. I think it was because of a shady yard, a breeze and sprinkler going.
Maybe just have it to move air but not directly on them. You are great chicken owners to do that for them.

No, I don't think they sweat. (although I'm not an expert) They will put their wings away from their body and pant. They will lose water and get dehydrated though, so make sure they always have water.

But I DO know that chickens absolutely, positively, difinitively, can't stand and hate change. If you gave them time, they'd probably get used to the fan.

My chickens didn't like the fan or the mister at all when we first introduced them, but with the temps being 100+ for nearly 60 days in a row, they really didn't have a choice.

Now they don't mind the fan at all, and purposely stand in front of the mister to cool off.
