My barred rock passed away recently from egg binding, but I was reading about some chicken diseases and people were saying their toes were curled up. My barred rock passed away in the nesting box and her toes were curled. Could it have been something else?

Not necessarily, it's a natural position for toes to curl after muscles are relaxed, then rigor mortis sets in.
