Oh, i tried to grow duckweed! - Why do you think it is called "duckweed"?!what happen with it did they eat it? you should also grow azzola and duck weed. I need to see if it fermits after drying like corn does at some point.
The ducks go NUTS for that stuff! Which means they eat it all up in an instance. It is more popular than peas, meal-worms and french-fries together!
I had another pond, hidden in the woods where duckweed was growing all by itself and i tried to grow duckweed on my main pond in 2019 … no chance. The ducks will eat it before it even has a chance to grow.
Fermenting that stuff? - I don't know, the water content might be too high for that. You don't ferment the fresh cut grass into silage, it has been dried for ½ -1 day and is half on its way to become hay. Having too much moisture in the fermenter may promote the growth of dangerous bacteria, like botulinum (yes, those producing botulinum toxin).
As for the azolla ferns, they are all of tropic origin and non native to West Virginia. If i drop a single plant of that into one of my ponds, i would have committed a misdemeanor, punished with a hefty fine. I could grow these in hydroponic containers and i am sure they would grow like crazy, but would the ducks eat that? And if it turns out that the ducks like that stuff, how would i keep the ducks out of these containers?
