Do ducks have pecking order?

My first guess would be that it is boys picking on and attempting to mate with the girl. It seems like they are being particularly aggressive, in my opinion, which is most likely to happen if there is a shortage of females. But if there isn't a girl around, the boys will do that to each other. My guess is you have at least one girl and two or three boys. I couldn't see from your photo that there were any sex feathers. Which one has them?

Drakes will develop their sex feathers on their own time frame, so you won't necessarily see all the sex feathers at once, even if they are all the same age.

Once egg-laying commences, and mating occurs regularly, I think you'll have a better idea.

If you do have 2-3 drakes and only 1 or 2 females, you will either need to get rid of all the drakes but one, or separate the sexes. Once the ducks start laying, the drakes can get really aggressive with them, if they are competing over one duck -- they can hurt and possibly damage her internal organs.

Thank you again for your help. I will take more updated pictures when I get home tonight and post them tomorrow so you can see the drake feathers and my boy's neck.

I'm glad I asked, I was really leaning towards splitting them up.

When will they lay eggs? I thought it was 6-7 months of age.

I have taken some pictures of my ducks. After close study, I think I might have three boys and one girl. Can anyone tell by looking at these photos? The neck on my smallest guy looks rough. His feathers are gone, but the skin hasn't been broken. Should I put something on that area to prevent picking? Does that work on ducks like it can on chickens?

Well, based on the photos showing drake feathers, it does look as though you may have 3 boys and 1 girl instead of the other way around, so I take back my earlier advice to leave them be. Funny thing is, the one with the chewed up neck looks like it is a male because it has drake feathers, so it is possible that they are all males!!! In either case, you can separate them into 2 groups to lessen the risk to the duck getting the most attention.

I would say you have 3 boys and 1 girl. You need to possibly find homes 2 of the boys, and keep the 1 boy and 1 girl, or separate them. 3 boys are too much for that one girl. We let our ducks hatch out eggs, and we ended up with 2 boys and a girl, but now we have 3 boys and 3 girls, and 1 boy kaki campbell who thinks he is a chicken. My husband says I have to get rid of 2 of the boys so I will have 1 drake for the 3 hens. from what I have read that is all I need. I love my ducks though. I know how you feel worrying about them.

Hi, the one that is doing the chase and pinning is a male, only males do this. Males are biger than the females, this is normal for breeding. And mails will get a sex curl on there tail.

Hopes this help

Your female needs and break from all males, the males have hurt and killed females.
