Most birds need light to lay.. I am unsure if dux do or not...do you want them to lay?

I read this as OP is using the shade cloth anyway and hopes this DOESNT stop the ducks laying.

Anyway I don't know about ducks but chickens only need light to lay, not sunlight. Artificial light is fine (as they use in large scale egg farming with caged birds) , although they might need extra vitamin D in their diet.

Maybe I misunderstood op. Our ducks get an extra hour or two of light from motion detector solar powered lights.

It not dark it just keeps sun off. I like duck eggs . Good for cakes.
