Do ducks need water to breed

I have two ducks, male and female. The female just started to lay and ever since I took them out of the pond for winter I haven’t seen them mate. Just wondering if they can only mate In water
 
Water facilitates mating but is generally not necessary. That being said extremely large or clumsy drakes may have trouble getting the job done without water. You can always crack one egg and look for the fertile 'bullseye'.
My two buff ducks are very large and clumsy
