Do free ranging birds need more calcium?

My girls free range about 6 hours/day. They always have access to their layer feed, but consumption has gone down since they found the joys of grass and bugs. Lately, it seems like their shells are a little weaker. Do they need calcium to offset the free range diet change? Thanks!

Free choice oyster shell is always a good idea.

Yep, free choice for oyster shells works best. Dryed egg shells, crushed to small pieces will work excellent also. One needs to keep in mind that the older a hen becomes will also require more calcium from the added stress of laying.

Heritage breeds lay well for years. I have 5 year old hens providing a purpose here on the hill.
