Do goslings have a high mortality rate in general?

All these stories recently on the DOA ducklings and gosling today has me wondering. What is the survival rate for goslings and ducklings? Will all waterfowl thrive as long as properly cared for or are losses inevitable even under the best of conditions?

I think if you have Fort Knox lock down it still happens. Then again some people let their geese free range without a fence and have 100% survival rates...
